The Intellectual Property Unit within the Ministry of Economic Development is the competent administration responsible for the protection of intellectual property rights in the Maldives. It was established to educate the public about various aspects of intellectual property rights. The unit is currently working on enacting legislation on Maldives Trademarks Law, Geographical Indications Law, and Industrial Property Rights. The Maldives is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and has submitted some of the notifications under Technical Barriers to Trade. However, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade reports that technical assistance is required for Maldives to fully comply with WTO obligations. The unit also coordinates with other government agencies and private sectors to formulate and implement plans to strengthen the protection of IP rights.
